IP67 Metal Push Buttons: A Simple Test Guide
A practical introduction to panel sealing, temporary immersion and test evidence, with Jinhong J22 product references.
In this article
IP67 means dust-tight protection and resistance to temporary immersion under specified conditions. For a metal push button, the test must cover the declared installation—not just a loose switch placed in water.
Confirm the product and seal.
Use the exact model, contact arrangement and LED configuration. Record the panel cut-out, thickness, gasket and mounting instructions. Establish whether protection covers the complete switch or only the front when installed.
The Jinhong J22 ring-illuminated momentary range includes J22-271 (1NO+1NC) and J22-272 (2NO+2NC). The product page specifies IP67 front sealing. Confirm the mounting conditions and supporting test documentation for your selected configuration.
Set up the immersion test.
For a tested enclosure less than 850mm high, the IEC 60529 IPX7 arrangement places its lowest point 1,000mm below the water surface for 30 minutes. The reference is the agreed test assembly, not necessarily the button head. Taller enclosures use a different arrangement.

Record water and specimen temperatures, depth and timing. Normally, the temperature difference should not exceed 5°C; the laboratory must confirm applicable exceptions and product requirements. Whether to energize or operate the switch must be defined in the test procedure.
Inspect and document.
Remove the assembly without carrying surface water into protected areas during inspection. Record any ingress, seal movement, functional changes and the electrical checks required by the applicable standard. “It still works” is not a complete acceptance criterion. Assess harmful ingress against the agreed requirements.
Check the dust evidence too.
Immersion alone demonstrates neither dust-tightness nor a complete IP67 rating. IP6X requires its own specified dust assessment. Keep the model identity, installation details and results traceable in the report.

This guide explains a method; it does not certify the pictured product. IP67 does not by itself establish suitability for pressure washing or permanent immersion. Use the applicable complete IEC 60529 standard and relevant product requirements for formal testing.
What to request with an IP67 report
Keep the evidence tied to the exact assembly being purchased. A photograph of a submerged switch cannot replace the documented test conditions and assessment.
| Check | Information to record |
|---|---|
| Specimen identity | Model, contacts, illumination and mounting or sealing arrangement. |
| Test record | Applicable standard, test conditions and inspection results. |
| Rating scope | Protected boundary and the separate evidence supporting both IP digits. |
Can a successful immersion demonstration establish the complete IP67 rating?
No. The rating includes dust protection as well as temporary immersion. The required evidence must address both, with the correct installation and acceptance requirements.
